Design for digital media BRIEF - Task 2, Web-Site

For the second part of brief we had to design mini web-site. For this task I have decided to create my web portfolio. After meditating on its content I found it essential to create at least three directories – Visuals (my drawings, designs and etc), words (my critical and analytical written works) and profile (about me section). When I had idea about the content I have designed a site-map which is essential even for a such mini web-site as mine and it helped me to avoid confusion and mistakes which could lead to the wasting of time and remaking plenty of work.

For the style basis I have took my work which I have produced for the first task of the brief. I found this idea successful and I wanted to see it working as the web.

Next step – sketches. I have decided do not use completely the same pictures because the idea of the portfolio is different to the print task (which purpose was actually showing my interests rather then works). Anyway the face would be used as a general graphic element and would carry function of the navigation as well.

Here is a description of what happens on the web:
When front page is loaded visitor would see face with closed mouth and eyes, next to them he would find appropriate links. Link to the sector called “Visuals” is located next to the eyes, link to the “Words” sector is located next to the mouth and link to the “Profile” sector is located next to the third eye on the forehead. Customer points his mouse cursor on the word “Visuals” and closed eyes would open. The same effect with each link. When customer in the particular part of the site he would see particular limb opened constantly which indicates the name of the sector. It would helps customer to navigate on my web. That is conception I wanted to put to the basis of my web-portfolio.

When I had general idea about what I am doing I have started to create graphics using photoshop. Further I sliced it in the ImageReady, which is very good utility which helped me to create rollovers to open eyes and mouth. Afterwards I edited sliced pages in the Dreamweaver - made aligns, created CSS, linked pages and inserted content using tables. Basically it was pre last stage of producing my idea. Hopefully later I will have a chance to put it on the hosting.

I think that I have managed to achieve desirable result and my mini portfolio looks approximately I have expected to.

I want to mention that lections I took at the college, books and magazines I have read helped me a lot to produce my idea in the right way following the conventions of web design etiquette and web-usability.

This is my classmates' feedback.
Thanks them a lot!

p.s. hope to publish it soon.
